James Henderson

Lead Consultant, Plextek

James Henderson is a Lead Consultant at Plextek specialising in the development of microwave and mm-wave systems for a wide range of applications in medical, industrial, automotive and space/aerospace sectors. Over the past decade, James has developed cutting-edge mm-wave capabilities having set up Plextek’s mm-wave specialist interest group focussing on combining expertise in areas of RF, antenna and mechanical design; this has led to the registration of several patents as well as peer-reviewed conference and journal publications.

The Pop in Your Job
I enjoy process of making things, particularly when you get to see an initial concept developed into a real product that combines many carefully thought-out features come to life. The opportunity to work on many interesting projects and helping our clients realise their vision I find particularly rewarding.

Less Details

As the automotive industry drives toward scalable, cost-effective autonomous systems, the limitations of traditional camera and lidar-based perception stacks are becoming more apparent. This session, led by Plextek’s radar engineering lead, explores a paradigm shift in sensor fusion strategies—one that leverages the untapped potential of mmWave radar to replace or augment imaging from optical and lidar sensors. Attendees will gain insights into cutting-edge approaches to front-end radar system design, advanced signal processing challenges, and how high-definition radar imaging is evolving into a compelling alternative for robust ADAS and autonomous vehicle applications.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How can next-generation radar front-end designs be optimised to achieve lidar-like resolution for high-performance automotive applications?
  • What are the key strategies for positioning mmWave radar as the primary imaging modality in sensor fusion systems, and how can reliance on cameras and lidar be minimised effectively?
  • What technical hurdles around propagation, antenna design, and signal integrity must be overcome to enable complex radar system development?
  • At the system level, how can radar-centric perception architectures reduce overall vehicle cost, complexity, and power consumption without compromising performance?
